After going undefeated at the U19 South Brisbane Championships, the MOB Academy Futsal team is now gearing up for their biggest test yet: the Queensland State Titles.
We caught up with Coach Alistair to talk about what’s behind the team’s success this season. It’s not just about talent or tactics. It’s about courage, connection and growth.
“The boys’ willingness to work hard at training, learn, adapt, and play bravely no matter the scoreline has been key. Their commitment to being courageous and backing themselves has brought real unity and strength to the group.”
That kind of mindset wasn’t always there. At the start of the year, many of the boys struggled with self-doubt and were hard on themselves. But over time, things shifted.
“They’ve worked hard to overcome self-doubt and unnecessary self-criticism, which held them back early on. Now they play with greater freedom, not afraid to make mistakes, and trust themselves and each other more.”
When asked about the biggest challenge the team has faced this season, Alistair was clear.
“The biggest challenge has been their own self-doubt, which sometimes stopped them from playing to their potential. They’ve overcome it by building a positive, fearless culture where they back each other and stay brave in tough moments.”
That strength showed up in key moments throughout the championships.
“The way the boys stuck together during setbacks, whether conceding a goal or dealing with tough calls, really stood out. Their resilience, teamwork, and composure showed how much they’ve grown as a unit.”
For Alistair, coaching is just as much about building character as it is about building skill.
“I focus on creating an environment where bravery, respect, and ownership are just as important as technical ability. It’s about teaching them to value the journey, support their teammates, and handle setbacks with maturity.”
He also shared what makes MOB players different to other teams he’s coached.
“MOB players are united by their shared goal of becoming better men, no matter their backgrounds or upbringings. That sense of purpose and togetherness drives everything they do.”
Now, with the State Titles in sight, the team is ready to test themselves again.
“I’m excited to see the boys test themselves against the best in Queensland and rise to the occasion. It’s a chance for them to show how far they’ve come and embrace the challenge on a bigger stage.”
And if he had to sum up the team in one word?
“Brave, because no matter what’s thrown at them, the boys choose to back themselves, play without fear, and support each other.”
