Facing What Most People Avoid: Money, Choices & Clarity in Year 12 MOB Success

We don’t talk about money enough. And when we do, it’s usually too late.

By the time most people face up to their finances, they’re already deep in it – debt, bad habits, short-term fixes, and long-term consequences. It’s no surprise. For a lot of young people, money is either a quiet stress or something no one ever really explained.

That’s exactly why this term in Year 12 MOB Success, we decided to bring it to the front.

No sugar-coating. No guilt-tripping. Just honest, practical conversations about money: what it is, how it works, and how it affects the lives our young men want to live.

What This Unit Was Really About

On paper, the focus was financial literacy:
✅ Budgeting
✅ Saving
✅ Responsible spending
✅ Goal-setting

But what our young men walked away with went deeper than that.

They unpacked how money shows up in their day-to-day. How they earn it, spend it, save it, and sometimes waste it. They explored their habits, reflected on the influences that have shaped their mindset, and considered how money can either support your values — or slowly pull you away from them.

And importantly, they did all of this without being made to feel ashamed for where they were starting from.

This wasn’t about becoming perfect with money. It was about understanding it — and owning your choices.

What Made It MOB

At MOB Academy, we don’t separate learning from life.

This unit was no different.

Our approach to financial literacy wasn’t about lectures or rigid formulas — it was about making space for young men to get curious, gain confidence, and set goals that actually fit their lives. We encouraged questions over answers. Progress over perfection. Responsibility over shame.

This unit was about helping our young men walk into life with their eyes open, their heads clear, and their feet on the ground.
