YEAR 7 AT MOB ACADEMY

Opening April 2026 | 1-7 Nerang Street, Southport

Men of Business Academy was born from one simple idea: every young man deserves to feel like he belongs and to find his people, place and passion. Since opening in 2020 as a Special Assistance School, MOB has been built by a community who saw too many good kids getting lost in a system that wasn’t built for them. Grounded in our vision of Building Better Men, we are guided by values of respect, passion, ownership, family and gratitude, and a commitment to seeing each boy for who he is and what he needs to thrive.

Year 7 at MOB is a smaller environment purpose built for boys only, where relationships come first, learning is practical, and every boy is seen. A place where confidence grows, mateship matters, and boys begin their high school journey feeling supported from day one.

Who is Year 7 at MOB for?

Year 7 at MOB has been purposefully developed for young men who don’t always thrive in traditional school environments. Some boys are behind academically. Some are neurodiverse. Some feel lost in large classrooms. Some are capable young men who simply need a different approach. What they share is potential, and a need for an environment that understands how they learn and grow.

The MOB Approach

Boy-Centric Education

Everything we do is unapologetically designed for boys - from our teaching methods to our subjects to the way we build relationships. We've been leaders in boys' education for five years, and we know what works.

Explicit MOB Instruction (EMI)

EMI, or Explicit MOB Instruction, is a structured teaching approach designed to make learning clear, engaging, and meaningful. It focuses on breaking lessons into distinct, purposeful steps where students know exactly what they are learning, why it matters, and how to demonstrate their understanding.

Small Cohort, Big Support

Our first Year 7 intake is intentionally small. Every boy is known personally, supported closely by teachers, teacher aides, psychologists, and youth support workers. Each young man can be seen, supported and encouraged as an individual, not lost in the crowd.

Core Teacher

Each Year 7 cohort is anchored by a core teacher who leads the group, sets expectations and creates stability. They work closely with our wider team - mentors, support staff and families - to ensure every young man is progressing, not just attending. In those first years of high school, boys need structure, and they need connection. The core teacher provides both. One adult who knows their strengths, understands their challenges and walks alongside them as they grow into young men of character.

The Year 7 MOB Experience

Every young man arrives with his own story.

The Year 7 MOB Experience:

Some have found learning challenging, others simply need a more connected and structured environment. What they often share is potential, and a need for an approach that recognises their strengths.

At MOB, boys experience:

  • A strong sense of belonging and mateship
  • Clear routines that build confidence
  • Practical learning environments
  • Support to grow socially and emotionally

Our goal is simple: help boys grow into young men who know their worth and are proud of who they are.

Learning Support

Support begins from the moment a young man connects with the Academy. During the Immersion Program and enrolment process, we complete targeted academic screening to better understand learning strengths, needs and starting points.

Some young men may also take part in additional cognitive or wellbeing screening. This helps our team build a clearer picture so we can provide thoughtful, personalised support – academically, socially and emotionally -from day one.

More Than Academics

Our wellbeing support includes teachers, teacher aides, psychologists, and youth support workers – like-minded individuals who often have shared life experiences. They’re here to build boys’ confidence, give them a voice, and be their advocate.

Older MOB students and alumni play an important mentorship role, offering positive examples of what it is to be a good young man and how MOB has helped them get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

About The Program

Year 7 at MOB has been purposefully developed for young men who need a different approach to high school. We’re built around what we know works for boys: clear structure, hands-on learning, strong relationships with staff, and a boy-centric environment where they’re seen, supported, and given the opportunity to grow.

Our program uses Explicit MOB Instruction (EMI), a teaching approach we’ve developed specifically for boys, drawing on the research-based pedagogy of Explicit Instruction and adapted to what we’ve learned from five years as leaders in boys’ education. Everything is designed around boy-centric content that’s interesting, practical, and achievable.

At MOB Academy we follow the Australian national curriculum, so all the essential content is covered. What sets us apart is how we deliver it. Our lessons are designed to be engaging, connected to the real world and structured using the Explicit MOB Instruction Framework to make learning meaningful and memorable. These subjects are:

Our Year 7 program includes:

  • MOB Success – writing, reading and communication
  • MOB Metrics – mathematics and problem solving
  • MOB Life – health, social-emotional learning and rites of passage
  • Physical Education (PE)
  • Humanities – history, geography and economic & business learning
  • Technology – design and digital technologies
  • The Arts – visual arts and media arts

These subjects are intentionally MOB-centred, grounded in our values and shaped around how boys learn and grow.

MOB Life is our signature program that spans the entire rite of passage journey. It’s informed by research in Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and rite of passage theory, guiding boys through key emotional competencies including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

Classes are built around a core teacher, so our boys will be with that teacher for most of that day, developing a sense of familiarity, trust, and relationship.

Yes, we are a Queensland Independent Special Assistance School. However, we’re not a traditional mainstream school. We’re a re-engagement school. If your young man struggles with his confidence at school, with friendship groups, feeling a sense of belonging, or requires support that goes beyond traditional learning support models, that’s what we do. We provide pathways through to Year 12, apprenticeships, traineeships, and beyond.

Practical Information

Young men at MOB wear a MOB Academy t-shirt, the same one worn across our community, carrying our logo and our motto, Building Better Men. There are no additional uniform expectations, aside from closed-in shoes for safety.

We keep things simple on purpose. By removing the pressure and scrutiny that often comes with traditional uniforms, young men can focus their energy where it matters most – on their learning, their wellbeing and their growth. It allows them to feel comfortable, express who they are and still feel a strong sense of belonging within the MOB family.

Our school operates five days a week, from 8:30am to 3:05pm. We provide breakfast and lunch for the boys, with check in beginning at 9:00am. Check in is an opportunity for all teachers to connect with present students in their class, talk about the day and record absences.

Our first Year 7 intake will be intentionally small. This allows each young man to be known personally, supported closely, and welcomed into a tight-knit community from day one.

While we can’t guarantee specific class sizes (as this depends on final enrolments), what we can guarantee is more directed, specific, boy-centric support. Our model includes teachers, teacher aides, psychologists, and importantly, youth support workers who are there to increase the quality and quantity of engagement for our boys.

You won’t be lost here. Every boy is known, seen, and supported.

Support and Wellbeing

Our wellbeing support is quite unique. Unlike most schools, we have an engagement team made up of youth support workers alongside our teachers, teacher aides, psychologists, and leaders.

Our youth support workers are like-minded individuals who often have shared life experiences and use that connection to help boys build confidence, find their voice, and have an advocate who will always be with them. This increases both the quality and quantity of engagement in our program.

Where to support the whole young man through his journey.

We’re implementing our own internal communication system, so families are informed on their device exactly when things are happening or when they’re changing.

Family communication is incredibly important to us. You’re part of the MOB family, and we want you connected to your young man’s journey every step of the way.

The MOB Difference

Year 7 at MOB has been purposefully developed for young men who don’t always thrive in traditional school environments. Some boys are behind academically. Some are neurodiverse. Some feel lost in large classrooms. Some are capable young men who simply need a different approach.

What they often share is potential, and a need for an environment that understands how they learn and grow.

We’ve spent the past five years shaping an environment that understands how young men learn, grow and develop. From our pedagogy and subjects to our wellbeing approach and culture, everything at MOB is intentionally designed with boys in mind.

Our team is made up of strong male mentors and highly skilled female educators and leaders who each bring depth, experience and insight to the community. Together, they create a balanced environment where young men are supported academically, emotionally and socially by adults who genuinely understand them.

MOB is a school built for boys, guided by a team who deeply understand and believe in them.
